interesting that Grant & Milsom not in starting line up
The signing of Nicky Hunt as right-back cover, and the fact that Milsom is relegated to the bench, confirms that Kevin Nolan not only regards Elliott Hewitt completely as a midfielder, but also as a good one. It seems as though he's earmarking him as his primary destroyer and workhorse in a 4-4-2 system.
Seems a lack of creativity in centre midfield
Possibly, but I think that's what Liam Walker is expected to provide. We shall see how he gets on.
One thing's for sure, Nolan seems absolutely committed to a 4-4-2 system and the two midfielders (whoever is selected) must work like Trojans, because we will frequently be facing opponents with 3 players in central midfield. It can be done, but you need players like Neil Bishop and Ricky Ravenhill who are robust and do the work of one-and-a-half men each. If we lose the midfield battle, the wingers don't get service and we're in trouble.
Saunders in front of Forte, Smith in front of Thompson etc.
Not overly surprised about Milsom. He has been used sparingly in pre-season. So either he is not completely fit or KN prefers others.
I am a smidge surprised that Grant is on the bench, i thought he might have played instead of Stead.
Five players making their debut into the starting 11 I think makes it stronger, certainly on the wings with Hawkridge and Allesandra.
Interesting that two of our back four are making their debuts. Obviously conceding goals has been a concern in recent seasons, and 2 goals a game was a major problem last season.
