Each to their own I suppose

Interesting food chemistry though as manufacturers fight to find additives and “ ingredients” to mimic the texture and taste of meat.

Many diets have more than enough highly processed foods in them

True, but most don’t claim to be healthy

How do you know when someone's a vegan?

It’s basically a shorthand for their approximate flavour and way of cooking em...what’s a bit dodgy though is the nutrition often isn’t the same. For example if someone buys a mushroom based sausage, it’s not gona have the same amount of protein as a meat sausage, so it needs people to read a label when they first get started.

For what it’s worth I made some seitan for Mum and Dad who have veggie food iften enough but don’t like the idea of meat replacement stuff. Seitan’s made from gluten and ends up with a nice bite to it, and when you slice it and fry it in a salty smokey glaze, well I wouldn’t want to claim it’s exactly the same as bacon but you can use it in the same way, it’s lots of protein and most importantly my folks liked it!

    Harpo,
Do you feel healthier for it?

I know that I eat too much red meat and it's mainly pork but we eat lots of chicken meals and more fish than ever.

I've tried some of the substitutes but I'd prefer a salad.

anyone with half a functioning brain would always seek out supporting and contradictory evidence to any 'claim' - whether that's about food or any other thing in life

Don't worry, they'll tell you. I take it that is the answer you were looking for.
