    Worst ever away day

What is your worst ever away day following Notts? This is inspired by a thread I saw on Twitter. Both the ones that spring to mind are opening day of the season, Yeovil in 2016 and Sutton in 2023. Awful traffic both days, and the weather wasn’t suitable for football either game (Yeovil was absolutely boiling, Sutton raining very heavily). Notts lost both of course

Rushden and Diamonds. October 2004. Either Bolland or Gill getting awful abuse from the Notts fans. I left early after about 70 minutes for the first time ever.

My first ever away game! But I was too young to remember it and be that traumatised by it

Charlton Athletic Away January 1993, Made the trip to London with a lad from school and his dad. Charlton were in the process of rebuilding the valley and had only 3 stands open as one running one side of the pitch had been demolished. We were told that it was all ticket for away fans as a limited number due to restricted capacity. However a few days before the game Notts said we could pay on the gate....Not the case when we got there as we were told it was all ticket and unless we had one we wouldn't get in. So me, my mate, his dad and around a hundred or so Notts fans spotted a row of houses behind the demolished stand so went climbing fences into people's back gardens to get to the bottom and watch the game through the fence overlooking the valley. We lost 2-1 and if memory serves me right Mark Draper scored our goal.

I paid about a quid to watch it from one of the gardens overlooking the ground (restricted view!!). A few years later one of my mates bought a house on Charlton Lane with the ground at the bottom of his garden. They'd built the new stand by then though.

Apart from the obvious Swindon away in 2019 and being relegated out of the football league and Gillingham away in 2015 and getting relegated to league two, another is Bristol City away in 2003 on the opening day of the season. Lovely warm sunny August day but there was a balloon festival on at Bristol which caused traffic delays that bad that many Notts fans never made it to the ground in time after coming off the motorway. So some fans like myself just went to the local motorway services and saw other Notts fans before heading back home. Those that did make it witnessed a 5-0 defeat to Notts.

I've had many abysmal away days like most of you I'm sure, but one hurts particularly. I was back in England. A few days after my mothers funeral (2003). Decided to go to the game at Swindon to somehow raise my spirits.

    Lost 5-0.

Mine's pretty similar. My grandma died in 2021 and I decided to go to the next notts away game to clear my head and try to take my mind off of things...

Just a shame it was the away trip to Halifax where we were 2-0 up against 10 men and still managed to lose.

Somehow, my mood wasn't really improved at all.
