    Ben Hamer

Apparently Ben Hamer has had to deactivate his Twitter account following his mistakes against Brentford.

I’ll readily admit that I don’t think he’s good enough and is one of a number of Derby players who I don’t believe have a future at Pride Park...but to ‘attack’ a guy in this way is cowardly and unacceptable imo.

Mistakes made by any keeper are always particularly ‘glaring’ and we’ve had more than our fair share over the last couple of seasons, but it does make you wonder about people.
What sort of idiot actually thinks it helps to get on the poor guy’s back after a bad afternoon and I wonder how, in a different era, greats - including Shilton and Banks - would have coped with such continual harassment from ‘fans’ that access to modern technology allows?
I thought the Kop singing ‘Careless Hands’ to Gary Sprake was tough enough...but at least it was spontaneous and funny.

Wonder too to what extent Lee Grant was forced out by fans’ negativity. He may have made some howlers but name a ‘keeper who hasn’t. He was as good as anything we’ve had since and has been a Premier League player of the season at Stoke since leaving us.

Have you seen any evidence that he was attacked on social media? Maybe he wasn't but its a ruse to seek sympathy.

It's time for something strong to be done about social media abuse. I see a 12 year old kid was arrested for racially abusing Wilfred Zaha over the weekend. It really has to stop at all levels, not just at the "black lives matter" end of the spectrum.

But how do you stop the monster we have created. No doubt during lockdown social media helped many young people through the isolation and tedium, but now we see its evil returning, from cyber bullying to outright abuse.

The technology behind social media may be fine, but unfortunately when you add in the human element it is, as ever, spoiled by the few, the nauseatingly moronic few.

Only the ‘evidence’ in the DT about him having to delete his account.
Completely agree with that last sentence...no idea how you legislate for it though. Same with just about everything...things are spoiled by society’s lowest common denominators.

The only way to solve it may be to remove the anonymity people hide behind. Sometimes you actually get forced to go anon.

Way back when, when the beeb had the 606 message board/forum, I was on there under my real name. The BBC decided that was not beneficial to my privacy and blocked the account. I had to re-register under a nomme de plume and lost all my previous posts as the original account had been deleted. I found that absolutely ridiculous. It was the trigger to the birth of the MadAmster.

People handle it in different ways. I remember when Savage joined this forum and joined in the banter. Not for everyone though!

Should stick with MadAmster...much more fitting than DamRotter.
