With regard to Quo and Notts Union Boat Club. The band played there a couple of times as (relative) unknowns. After they became famous they got wind of the club being in financial deep water. As the club had given them bookings when the band was trying to make it, they very generously did a return visit to the club and did it for free to repay the club for helping them on the way up.

As I recall, Retford Porterhouse used to include a clause in their contracts that bands had to return to the venue at the same fee within a year. I've heard rumoured that a number of bands in the early 80's bought-out that obligation at a very advantageous fee for The Porterhouse, possibly including Def Leppard and Iron Maiden, and I also recall seeing Magnum there do a one-off gig there immediately after their biggest ever tour where I'd seen them pack out the Royal Concert Hall with a massive light show. May all just be rumour but if not it was good business by The Porterhouse

I'll continue to stick up for Showaddywaddy - ELP they weren't, but if you were after a no nonsense jolly up at that time there were few better acts IMO, I THINK I saw them at Baileys supporting Strife - now there was a mismatch!

Edit, sounds such a simple song, but I've been trying for 40 years to master it on guitar and my incompetence has defeated me
No shame in that, it's a 16th note groove, one of the hardest techniques to learn on the guitar, and if you're not doing it right, no amount of practice will fix it...

I just had a quick look on youtube for a decent lesson on the technique, and they're all crap. You should get a lesson, otherwise the defeat will continue!

Thanks for the confirmation and advice, I was amused by a comment further up about (probably Quo) songs being 'just two chords' slag slag blah blah, there are simple songs throughout popular music that are fiendishly difficult to play and vv, non-players never get that (strictly I'm a non-player but at least I've failed after trying to understand stuff)

Careful Adi, he’ll be looking at doing your ‘books’ next...mind you, anyone who could get John Lee Hooker and Canned Heat to play Birmingham Uni. can’t be all bad.

£45, which is more than most, but I don't do regular lessons anymore, so tend to do specialist stuff or cram more in. Regular lessons with most tutors are £25 - £35 per hour, usually a deal for bulk booking.

If you want to do my books, RA can do the teaching, and I'll take the profit like some online teachers do!
