    Rip Tom Finney

The great man visited Palmy in the 50's when his team PNE opened Queen's new floodlights I think.

A superb player who, while never playing against the Queens, turned out at Palmerston during the Second World War years in a RAF v Army game. Tom also played for an Army side called the Wanderers alongside the late Willie Harkness.

Tom's PNE were indeed the opposition when the Palmerston floodlights were opened on 29th October 1958, the Lancashire team winning 6 - 0 in front of a crowd of over 11,000. The honours were performed by Mrs Gordon Hunter wife of the club doctor and the referee was R. H. Davidson father of Alan (Barney) who played 364 times in goal for Queens 1982 - 1993.

Had the pleasure of meeting Tom Finney at a Greenall Whitley sports night in Carlisle he was a proper gentleman.

He thought the world of Ernie Hannigan when he was at Preston. Ernie signed from Queens in 1964 for AŁ15,000 he returned to Queens in 1972 for a short spell making a further 13 appearances making a total of 147 appearances and scoring 8 goals.
