Thread: Goalkeeping Coach

    Goalkeeping Coach

Seen a lot mentioned that, with Steve Phillips leaving, we need a new GK coach to keep category 2 status.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but was Paul Antrobus (currently Academy Operations Manager) not formerly employed in this role? Could we not ask him to fill in as GK coach until we find a new one/budgets allow?

I find it incredible that the club has not got a budget for a goal keeping coach we have stayed up and are getting rid of some of our top earners, it does not bear thinking about what would have happened had we been relegated. We have seen this season with the emergence of Ben how key a position this has been.

I also think Steve Phillips was key to Ben's development I do not know now how this may affect Ben.

Steve Davis I think stated we would have a goalkeeping coach as he saw the merit to such as position as it was a specialist position, so what's changed. Our outfield players benefit from excellent coaches so why not Ben.

Backward step and short sighted by club imo not renewing Steve Phillips as a coach even if his playing contract was not renewed.

But we will have a GK coach - it is a requirement of Cat 2.
I think the problem was cost, and Steve was more expensive (No2 GK and GK coach)than we could afford.

John Bowler has made it clear that the 500k we get for staying in Div 1 is *****. I presume (always dangerous) that the cost of the Academy is hitting player budgets. With the good youngsters coming through after a bit of a hiatus, it is a cost that's well worth it, in my very humble opinion.
