    "Leading the chase"...

    F-ucking HATE this journalist rent-a-quote.

    "West Ham are leading the chase to sign Randomo C-untio from Greasinese FC"

    Like THEY f-cuking know who's in position A.

    How many times have we been "leading the chase"?... and then 5 days later to be "pipped at the post".

    'Leading the chase' is an often used phrase issued by the media (usually the tabloids) that means that a player's agent has 'leaked' news to them that he may be available if the agent's fee is right.

    A mid-table club, often with no interest whatsoever in said player is selected as being in pole-position thereby hiking up the price before the player inevitably goes elsewhere.
