I think some of you are missing the point here (and please don't try to defend your case by using that tired phrase "political correctness").
Here WE are in a world where racial/religious divisions still cause a huge amount of pain and bloodshed.
And there is Whelan, a supposedly intelligent man in a prominent public position, spouting stereotypes that are bound to be offensive.
And there some of YOU are, defending him.
So EVERY Jew in the world is a grasping materialist - is that it? And Chinese/Korean/Thai (etc) people shouldn't object to being called "Chinkies" - is that it?
This is not about "political correctness"; it is about a lack of empathy and respect.

Whelan made the mistake of talking to a Lefty newspaper, he should have known better than to use these terms. It's all about perception and he can't see where he has blundered. Maybe he should take himself out of the hot seat and retire gracefully.

Finally some common sense in the whole 'debate.'

Well done Kick it Out!! Whilst the rest exploited his words, whilst ignoring the sentiments of them to further their own publicity. - view external link

It's about society changing and trying to make progress. Obviously, some of those words are more likely to cause offence than others.
What you have to try and do is put yourself on the receiving end. The word "nigger" was in everyday use at one time. Would you use it now?
I don't think many Chinese people would be happy with being referred to as "Chinks" - not to mention people from other Asian countries.
I know that this will bring accusations of "political correctness'. I don't ca

the way i view it is, would you use the term to the faces of the people in question? if you wouldn`t, then that would suggest it`s an offensive term..
