Played in the great Burnley championship winning side and 3 appearances for England. Was a good player for us too. Remember the old blonde, sticky-up barnet very well.

    RIP Ray.

    re: RIP Ray Pointer

March 1968 we were drawn to play West Brom at home in the 5th round of the FA Cup.. The week before in front of a big Fratton crowd Ray was injured in a 2.1 defeat to Brum. He never played again that season, without him Pompey only won 3 of the remaining league games. I vividly remember seeing both those games. Pompey lost to West Brom too, watched by a crowd of over 42000. The Baggies went on to win the FA Cup.
Sad News when I read this. RIP Ray Pointer

    re: RIP Ray Pointer

    Pompey's team that day was
    1 John Milkins
    2 Roy Pack
    3 George Ley
    4 George Smith
    5 Ron Tindall
    6 Harry Harris
    7 Albie McCann
    8 Mike Trebilcock
    9 Ray Hiron
    10 Bobby Kellard
    11 Nicky Jennings

It resulted in a 2.1 defeat, Astle and Clark scored for the Baggies, Ray Hiron for Pompey, Ray Pointer didn't play another game after the Brum game that season

Wasn't the first leg a 0-0 draw on a weekday evening? I'm sure I was there.

We'd won at Peterborough in the 3rd Round 1.0....Drew at Fulham 0.0 in the 4th before winning the evening replay 1.0. The official attendance is given as 44050 but that was the evening the Milton End gate was broken down and many poured in for free. Was that the game you are thinking of ? The 5th round against the Baggies was a bog standard Saturday afternoon kick off. There would have been a Hawthorns replay if it had been a draw. The Baggies had indeed won a replay at the Dell to advance to Round 5.

Give up. It's all got lost in a crazy psychedelic 60s mush.
