    Although I wasn't talking to you, I did find Al Jolson rather cringeworthy like I did The Black and White Minstrels and some of Satchmo's records a few decades later.PS:- Of course Al Bowlly was English, like Joanne Lumley who was born on the Indian Sub-continent he was born in what was then part of the British Empire.

    Sorry Arundel...think you'll find OTR is right...again. Bowlly was born in Mozambique to Greek/Lebanese parents. Mozambique was a Portugese Colony and not, as you suggest, part of the British Empire...so exactly as OTR suggests...'wasn't English' but 'lived here much of his life'.
