Vincent Van Gogh and a Bottle of Wine

People pay millions for an original Van Gogh, and yet his paintings were no better than those of a 10 year old at primary school.
He only sold one painting during his life and his best mate bought that.
The same with wine. Thousands are paid for a bottle from a "vintage year" and then it is stored in a cellar at the correct temperature.
It could taste like cat p!$$ for all anyone knows and yet they have paid thousands for it.
"Sold to the man with the handlebar moustache."
    Just snobbery really isn't it?
5 quid is more than enough for a bottle of grape juice.

A lot of people tried to contact Van Gough about buying some of his paintings, but he never heard them call

It's not the Dutch, but Poles that make the best post impressionists.

Rothko's paintings of Black on Maroon are worth millions and they were apparently hung upside down. A child at nursery could paint better.

Spot on lads. Photos are a lot more realistic than paintings. 30/40 million for a painting. Sheer madness. I wouldn't want most of the stuff hanging in my home. Mind you I doubt the people who buy them have them hanging in their homes either, probably tucked away in a vault.
As for wine, well £4 gets you a perfectly palatable white, cheap red isn't so good, need to push up to the £6 mark for that.
£40 to watch a football match live is scandalous too.

I wonder how much a Rolf Harris painting would fetch today? I wonder what the Queen has done with her's?

There were many people in the world who didn't get recognition in their lifetime, but after death. That doesn't necessarily mean they were not genius. Van Gogh painted from different perspective throughout his life, which may be a reflection of different places Gogh visited in his life. His many artworks are recognized as masterpiece today and I don't know why you are against him

Explain how he was a genius?

I agree with the above-his paintings were amateur at best.

    Pretentious crap.

I’ve got a Rolf that the wife bought me before the scandal Des.

It wasn’t expensive by his standards but probably worth less now.

Strangely,I expect his works will gain in value after his death.

Regardless of his kiddie fiddling the guy was a unique artist.

Art appreciation has to be in the eye of the person judging it....it’s like when my grandad said that the *** Pistols and Black Sabbath’s music was utter crap........it’s a matter of personal choice.

    Hello Newcy,

    Have you ever visited Paris?

If you haven't and do get there, go visit Musée D'Orsay and in particular the room for the Impressionist Painters. Here, I feel sure you will, as I was, be blown away as you enter the room because his "Sunflowers" is right there in front of you. It is a Masterpiece.

However, it is a matter of personal choice.
