It seems that the swear filter does not deal with all the words that the site editor deems to be unacceptable. That's fine by me, but can we not simply update the proscribed words list in the swear filter dictionary otherwise there is going to (a) be a lot of moderation required to expunge words that are not swear filtered away but are deemed to be nonetheless offensive to "women and children" and (b) people could receive unjustified warnings and bans for using words that are not swear filter banned but are on the non approved manual override list.

I too was banned for a week by the same Mod for having the temerity to ask why Tom was banned for circumventing the swear filter by using a word derivation which was not actually a banned word in any event.....

this needs sorting or it will become a long term problem. We clearly cannot use "common sense" because different people have different sensitivities to different words.
Going to have to look into the problem with the swear filter as it appears not to be doing its job, as all cards issued recently (this week)
all have the words in the swear filter that were used and should have automatically been altered.

Personally I would like to think people are mature enough to know when a word, or words are likely to cause offence and likely to be jumped on by moderators.

No we don't. Words like bitch which we might think is offensive isn't.

Steny got banned a week for 4rse yet someone who typed f"ck off wasn't even sanctioned.

Lets just leave the filter and not have Mods decide their own preferences.

NB: Please reply to question in FAO

I hadn't started to vet the swear filter last week, and as I have pointed out it seems to be on the fritz, so please don't try to start up this whole moderating issue again. We are starting from today and as I also said people should have the common sense, self respect and maturity not to have to resort to that kind of language....

As i said earlier, times change and words that I would find offensive are routinely used in the media, in programs aimed at an audience well below watershed age. This is most obvious in comedy programs where shock value is greatly overused. Consequently there are a number of words which, 20 years ago might have been seen as offensive but nowadays I hear routinely used in primary school playgrounds and shopping malls by under 10's.

So its not a question of maturity, its that people of differing ages have differing acceptable word usage. For example the words deemed offensive just recently - referring to buttocks and urination - would have been deemed inappropriate by my grandmother, but now form part of the day to day vocabulary of most 40-somethings etc. Language is an evolutionary thing and certainly is evolving to a lowest common denominator, with the f-word now in common usage as a simple adjective of emphasis. Just go to any game and that is obvious: opposition players are rarely called "dashed blighters" any longer as may have been the case in the original Bloomer's day.

There has to be a line drawn for all by someone then, which is where the swear filter comes in. He who controls that, controls what is and is not acceptable use of language: that is your privilege as editor and I, for example, am happy to respect wherever you pitch that level of acceptability. But you cannot expect people to use their own judgement because different people have very different ideas of what is acceptable and what is not. As I said before, there are many who I know who deem the f-word to be acceptable and use it routinely in everyday conversation with men, women and children - indeed some women are amongst the worst offenders, and dont start me on the subject of children's learned language.

Ok fair enough, let's leave you to vet the swear filter then

Although I do suggest an apology to Stenny is the right thing to do IMO.

I have already re-instated StensonRam with an explanation of the action and why that action has been rescinded

Thank you for your response to this bloomer but just to be clear I was not carded by you for avoiding the swear filter so I don't understand what card you have rescinded? You PM'd with a 'warning' that if I circumvented the filter again then a ban would follow, I highlighted to you the fact that I hadn't circumvented the swear filter because I meant to type arse and arse it allowed, I know this from past experience when I did admittedly circumvent the swear filter by typing 4rse, the rat carded me for a week just for the intent as he couldn't card me for arse as it's allowed hence the ill feeling between many including myself and the rat.

All I asked was you retract your warning as based on the previous as I have not circumvented anything.

As this looks like a glitch in the system I will retract the yellow cards but if others are either circumventing or deliberately avoiding the swear filter we will take action as I stated earlier.
I see Stenson & Roger have turned this thread off topic repeating their same old tripe over and over again and you made it worse by replying to them oh! the irony.

So glad I got them on ignore don’t miss it one bit.

I think the content of the thread was over after 10.30pm last night - re: Arsenal v Norwich.
What followed is just something else to a matter which ended at 10.30pm
