there were other players to stop the ball after mattock for the first goal, and vyner's poor positioning and lack of tracking back (along with taylor) gave Irvine a free role to attack. If the vyner or taylor tracks the run of Irvine then he shouldn't get a shot in.
If we play with 1 up front, then there is no point player long ball if there is no one to run on to smiths knock downs.
With the 3 cm, it looked like we have two sitting back and one forwards (although it was hard to tell as neither of them knew what they were doing). Your better just having 1 holding midfielder and two pushing forward to help support smith and put pressure on the opponent.
