The Start Of The End : Football

I was flicking through teletext and read the title of one of their football headlines.

Barcelona and Girona ask permission for US game.

They have actually asked the Spanish Football Federation for permission to play a league matche in Miami.

If this match gets the go ahead it will finally take football clubs away from supporters.

    Something to look forward to

Is David Beckham in charge of Miami?

Frog, sounds great! Can see it now RUFC v Real Madrid to play in New York.

Wonder how many Millers would make that game?

Yes the football authorities are hell bent on producing a "product" for global tv audiences.

Interesting to note that the clubs are in favour of the idea but their players aren't

An unfortunate but natural progression. Quite a few entertainments have followed similar trajectories in pricing out or otherwise getting rid of their original working class audiences, even something like Italian opera.
I noticed today that all but one of the top RUFC clubs want to sell out to a venture capital firm because rising player wages are killing them. It's getting crazy but God knows how to turn the tide.

A friend of mine said to me some years ago about how American football was being priced out of reach to the normal supporters. He said that many people could only go to one or two matches per season.

I hope that this doesn't happen to our game. We've seen how the EDL have remarketed their league in wake of the new TV deals given out.
Could football as we know it really exist without the big clubs? Would the reliance of the TV money filtering down the leagues continue if a World franchise was to happen?

How many teams could a franchise really, truely support?

This is comparable with the NFL games that are getting played at Wembley each season , started with pre season games in the 80's , then progressed to one proper game and now we are up to 6 a season I believe .

Only a matter of time before London has an NFL franchise and the Super Bowl is played at Wembley on a rotation system with other cities in the US , to be fair the games are sold out well in advance so the markets defiantly there .

What will be will be , it's progress I guess for the big clubs and definitely worth pursuing if the numbers are acceptable .

The heart and soul left football in this country well over 20 years ago and it won't return at PL and Championship level in this country .

Makes no odds to us chaps we won't be getting an invite so crack on I say .

Rugby league is like the last team sport where's there's still a proper connection between the fans and the players, although commercialism is advancing there too (Hull FC have limited edition Marvel Black Panther team shirts) shame South Yorkshire don't have a team in the Super League when a French team does though.
