Interesting article. Centrally around the historical context of Nissan setting up in Sunderland. But touches on how the Thatcher government used membership of the EU to whoo Japenese firms to the UK. This is a memo from Keith Joseph to Thatcher in 1980 - “The deal [is] tangible evidence of the benefits to the UK of membership of the European Community; Nissan [has] chosen the United Kingdom because it [gives] them access to the whole European market. If we were outside the community, it is very unlikely that Nissan would have given the United Kingdom serious consideration as a base for this substantial investment.”

EU grant for Ford to move Transit production to Turkey when they're not even in the EU (although they're still negotiating entry even though their leader is now an Islamist).

So favouring an non-EU country over an EU one.

Surprised we didn't leave earlier with things like this going on.

However my point is this , membership of the EU guarantees you nothing in terms of keeping company's in the UK , absolutely zilch .

In fact Nissan could have moved their production from Sunderland anytime they wanted .

    The EU protects nowt

It was a loan to Ford not a grant and it didnt strictly shift production direct to Turkey.

March 2010, the UK government offer a loan guarantee for a £450 million EU loan to Ford. With a backdrop of Ford making massive loses, the loan designed to safeguard production in Southampton and Es***. However continued losses meant they ultimately closed.

We hear about the £8m loan to the Turkey plant but not the £450m loan to the UK division.

The Single Europe Act, that paved the way to the establishment of the Single Market and Custom Union was the idea Thatcher.
