Absolute nonsense that we have either a mutual rivalry or serious contempt for PNE

David Reeves and Paul Simpson left Carlisle United to join Preston North End. The last time that the two clubs
were in the same division for a couple of seasons PNE played against us in a somewhat robust (John Beck) manner. These matters are just normal routine events in football and clearly do not constitute reasons to claim that there is a mutual rivalry or any animosity between either the two clubs or their respective supporters.

Yet there are a (very) few people on the 'social media' who claim that there is either a local rivalry or a strong dislike between the clubs or their supporters or both.

This is not sensible because :-
The clubs are 90 miles apart and if you draw a circle of 90 mile radius from Preston you will find a vast number of clubs within it that have far greater significance to PNE than Carlisle United ever will have. PNE hardly know that Carlisle United football club exists.

For their entire history the two clubs have been in the same division for only a small proportion of their existence.
Anyone who has the slightest knowledge of PNE knows that they have one overall rivalry and that is with Blackpool, though they relish the opportunity to do battle with Blackburn, Bolton and Burnley. These 5 clubs have historically often been in the same division.

Preston has a far greater population than Carlisle and furthermore Preston is in an overall high population area. Leave Preston in almost any direction and you are in another large town. Leave Carlisle in almost any direction and you are in open countryside. Preston is a real 'football town' in a way that Carlisle never will be. Thus PNE will always be a far bigger club than Carlisle United.

The further back you go the more obvious is the difference between the two clubs. PNE were in the top tier when Carlisle United were in the Third Division North.

Currently PNE are 2nd in the Championship whilst we are 20th in League 2.

Does anyone really believe that Preston North End supporters currently talk of little else than their supposed rivalry with Carlisle United?

There are just a few Carlisle United supporters who try to perpetuate the myth that we should either dislike PNE or consider that PNE and Carlisle United have a mutual rivalry. Clearly this is utter nonsense.

To anyone who supported Carlisle United in the early seventies Preston are definitely an irrelevance.

In 1974-75 Carlisle United were in the top tier when Preston were in the third division.

CUFC's local derbies then were Newcastle and Burnley.

    Preston's were Halifax and Bury.

    Hope this helps.

Clearly that brief period is a formidably good argument that can absolutely not be countermanded by a vast amount of common sense.

Anyone who sees Carlisle United and Preston North End as clubs of anywhere near the same substance is utterly deluded.

Both long before and long after that brief period the truth is there for all to see. Carlisle United were top of tier one for a few days so that is presumably the argument that can stand for all time that the club is now and for ever will be an elite organisation.

Read the first post properly. Anyone who believes that Carlisle United can compete with Preston North End over a substantial period of
time is not able to see common sense. This rubbish about the two being rivals or about it being the implicit duty of Carlisle United supporters to despise Preston North End is simply rubbish as has been simply and logistically explained in the first post.

This is hardly controversial. It is merely directed at those few Carlisle United supporters who are living in a fantasy.
