That's the most staggering bit of all. Yesterday he was telling parents of Primary school kids 'send them to school', despite huge opposition from many quarters. ONE DAY later, he's telling the same parents 'keep your kids at home'! So what exactly has changed in a day?

I couldn't help but notice that when he delivered his carefully rehearsed address reading from an autocue, there were none of the usual 'ums' and 'errs' in between words. Contrast that with him being asked a direct question where he has to think for himself, and the ums and errs are very, very frequent.

During the first lockdown when the weather was good, I'd take the dog over the park and would hardly see a soul. In the last couple of months, despite the various restrictions and the weather being sh1te, there have been large groups of people everywhere.

I reckon it was recorded anyway.

National lockdown? That's a joke! Few differences to tier 4 apart from schools. I have personal experience of what school leaders have gone through over the last few days, only to now be told the school will be closed tomorrow anyway.

Garden centres still open - basically department stores where people socialise.

Under tier 4 you could only meet up with 1 other person for exercise, yet saw plenty of groups with several couples together who had obviously met up.

How embarrassing to be behind Starmer virtually every step of the way.

One of the biggest issues in the spreading of the virus is people abusing the so called ‘support and child-care bubbles’. I know several families just on our street that are visiting family saying it is for child care when the parents are not even working. They are stupid and totally irresponsible.

I'm with Navy on this one, when I took the dog out when it all started there wasn't a soul about. Now it's packed all over and has been since Cummings did his 60 mile round trip to the castle. Also as others have said the message changes from the morning to the evening so people just think they don't know what they're doing so I'll just do what I want. Also I'm sorry but people do have to take some of the blame themselves, sick of this no personal responsibility people seem to have now days, some things are your own fault, you can't blame everyone else for you ****ing up and being selfish.

I mean if I get covid I'm dead I'm down to 12% kidney function but I've kept safe and so not to give me it have my family /in laws and we're all alright. Alot of people don't care if they get it cause to most it might be no worse than flu so they're doing what they want as tired of stopping in. That's not anyone's fault expect their own. I'm glad we don't have another world war cause we can't even stop in and watch Netflix for 10 months nevermind do anything more for the greater good.

It's not being behind Starmer. Starmer is just keeping up with what any sensible person on the street or on here is. Nothing magical or statesmanlike about that.

    Agreed.

As much as people might cite the likes of Dominic Cummings or Margaret Ferrier or Premier League footballers or any other 'celebrity' who has been caught allegedly breaking the lockdown rules (by journalists like Kay Burley!) I don't buy the excuse that this "causes" other folk to do the same. It takes me back to that old parental adage that just because your mate stuck his hand in the fire doesn't mean you have to do the same thing. Take responsibility for your own actions.

That said, I think there's an element of human nature at play, whereby people's concentration and alertness can only stay at a high level for so long before reverting to a mean somewhere between what's required by the restrictions and what's considered to be normal day-to-day activity. Yes there are some selfish individuals who knowingly ignore the restrictions and seemingly don't think the rules apply to them. However, I think the majority of people do try to do the right thing, but subconsciously let their guard down from time to time.

I agree that people aren't anywhere near as intense in their rigid adherence to social distancing as they were when this was all a novelty last Spring, but I've actually been quite surprised how tolerant and persistent most people have been in continuing to follow rules which are so alien to our culture and way of life. Of course, there are legal incentives in place to try and enforce this, but the Police can't go around fining or arresting everyone and nor would they want to. Ultimately, controls like this have to be applied by consensus.
