There are many many reasons the UK has suffered. I don’t think we should or could simplify it down to blaming Boris, that would brush away many other impacting factors.
In no way does that absolve him from blame though, significant errors have been made.
But no one should underestimate the underlying social issues which have existed for decades which have created an environment where the impact of these errors has been multiplied.
Years of austerity, red tape in our heathcare system, social inequality, and lack of foresight combined with the obvious distraction of Brexit, have compounded the errors made by this government.
The root causes of a number of the 100,000 deaths go back an awful lot further than Covid 19.
We really need to ensure these are not just hung on the errors of the past year. Or we will have learnt nothing.
I'm not sure that's particularly helpful, BH.
This Gov has made many mistakes during this pandemic, of that there is no doubt.
But citizens of the UK, ALL citizens, must bear some of the responsibility as well. We're the one's who spread it.
If it were left to me we'd still have been in the 1st Lockdown that was called. That certainly would have saved lives but we'd be nigh on bankrupt by now, praps we are anyway?
One thing's for sure, if the government really have 'followed the science', our science is way behind most other countries.
... that's right Snobhead 1, blame the government for everything when much of the current mess is down to a portion of the population who will not follow guidelines. If you wanted rules then go and live in a society that has been brought up to follow rules without question - and it's not here. One of the reason people from overseas come to the UK is our lax approach to control; so don't be surprised if a faction of the resident population see others taking the p155 and think if it's ok for them, I'll have some of that too. In other words, a breakdown in social structure, aided by the woke, liberal society we have today.
The government are at major fault for not picking up on the 2016 pandemic review. I would like to know who sat round that cabinet table, discussed the pros and cons, then wouldn't sign off the spend to put us in a safe position. That would be one or each of the PM, Chancellor and Health Minister. Journalists are at fault too for not pressing to see/find out the details of discussion for that/those meeting/s - probably too difficult for todays journo's ...
