Not sure why it’s turned into a quarrel about who’s more working class than who, but if you’re really implying that ‘socialism, Marxism, Stalinism and collectivism’ are merely ‘communism’ by any other name then you’re very much mistaken, Tricky.
Well professor Plum, that is an interesting remark on that quote.

Communism is the political belief that all people are equal, that there should be no private ownership and that workers should control the means of producing things.
...the ultimate triumph of communism in the world.
Synonyms: socialism, Marxism, Stalinism, collectivism More Synonyms of communism

Not my words, that was direct quote from the Collins dictionary.

Maybe you need to take it with them, as you obviously know better.

Sounded very like politicising to me! If you believe that your "importances" paragraph represent things that we need to learn, I am so depressed. Do you really think no-one knew this before? The only area I would question is your need for disaster planning - I'm sure that the NHS has actually done such planning, but equally sure that they cannot actually fully resource them all upfront within any sensible budget given the number of possible disaster causes ranging from a variety of possible pandemics to nuclear holocaust
No the analysis was specifically how would the NHS cope in a pandemic, there was a report with recommendations for preparation and the government ignored it.

Quite like how the government despite having pre warning chose not to do what South Korea did and test everyone with symptoms, despite having plenty of time to plan and prepare for this. There are a lot of questions to be asked at the right time on the governments strategy and why it flipped so quickly!

Funnily enough the germans seems to have managed it.

Professor Plum...lol! Suppose it makes a change from your usual ‘professeur’ jibe.
Fair point Tricky...but you need to read the ‘small print’. A synonym is defined as ‘a word or phrase that means exactly OR nearly the same as another word or phrase’.

In post #68 you implied that communism, socialism, collectivism, Marxism and Leninism were all the same. They’re not and though you have repeatedly referred elsewhere to Corbyn as being a ‘Communist’...he’s not either.

Sure there are lots of similarities and if you were to draw a Venn diagram - not really my strongpoint - there’d be lots of overlaps just as there would - as Swale has already suggested - if you included fascism in the list.

My point is that it is a classic oversimplification on your part to try and make out that the five ‘isms’ you identified are the same, just as it would be to suggest that capitalism and socialism are incompatible when there are at least four forms of capitalism - GP can probably list more - displaying varying degrees of social responsibility.

RA its a classic case of somebody trying to understand concepts that are beyond his intellectual capacity.

Wow, a man rises from humble working class stock. the 2 up 2 down champion, to the worlds biggest psycolanalyst of politics within a life time.
A Ken Barlow of champions of terrace housing. One minute he's learning to grade spuds, then a spell at university changes everything.
Behold mortals, the messiah has returned

Stalin, born to a poor family in Gori, joined the Russian social democratic Labour party
Hitler born in Austria before moving to Germany in 1913. fought as a private in the great war. then joined the German workers party in 1919.

Nope, no sign of communism there. But the fundamental connection was SOCIALISM.
If you read it all again, it connects all the factions of political leanings of the left.
Where as socialism sounds like a utopia of wonder for the lower classes. It has never been workable on its own.
It goes either one way or the other.
To a communist or capitalist leaning.

Now back to the Guardian you two,. The thinking, intellectual mans left wing rag is doing a great piece by Owen Jones, on how COVID 19 is targetting gays deliberately.

Just needs to be more careful over the company he keeps, GP.

In all seriousness I do despair of our leaders...Johnson has been poor and contradictory both in words and examples imo.
Trump has just been exposed as a complete idiot over this issue...he’s literally gone from it all being ‘fake news’, to the ‘Chinese virus’, to ‘it’ll all be over by Easter’, to (five days later) April 30th, to (latest) ‘by June’. He may be good where money is concerned, I don’t know, but he hasn’t got a clue as regards this...and apparently the President of Belarus, where there is no sort of ‘lockdown’, believes that daily vodka and saunas are the answer!

You couldn’t make it up, and I’ve even heard of a doctor - a doctor ffs - who suggested that there was no need to cancel church services because churches are holy places and as such immune from viruses!!

Jeeze even for you the mangling of what label is attached to an organisation and what that organisation actually does or how it gets manipulated by those in power in order to conform with your "victimhood" is astounding.

There are so called think tanks with innocent sounding names that are actually fronts for those pushing extreme right wing views.

Socialism as with any other "ism" can mean whatever the person using it wants it to mean, for ****s sake, many Americans think that all european countries are marxist, communist or socialist states when that is quite obviously not the case!

As for your snide critic of the guardian, mm for someone who quotes the daily express as a news source thats and extreme case of the kettle calling the pot black!

Hang on RA, are you sure you're not letting your personal feelings drive your brain again?
This crisis is changing every single day. You claim Johnson has been poor, but the public definitely don't see it that way.
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics...irus-epidemic/

In effect, two thirds of the public are very happy with how he's handled it. Now I'm not sticking up for Johnson, but you seem to be slapping him down when the majority of folks are not. Why?

Hypothetically, Corbyn in power could have thrown up some interesting alternatives-
    1. Jews - herded together?
    2. Ethnics getting priority treatment, under Abbotts guidelines?
The permutations of power grab could be endless. Of course this is just my bias against the worst Labour leadership in 85 years.
Which reminds me, Swale you never did reveal who you voted for.
