James Milner, maybe not underrated but i still think it was madness selling him.
Was listening to the Pod on the Tyne podcast (has George Caulkin on it and it's a really good listen) and they had Aaron Hughes on it. Because they were speaking to him, maybe they went a bit over the top but he was a good, steady player for us and even at the time I would have liked to see him stay.
But no, Souness wanted to give his Rangers buddies £9 million for a shite player they'd got for free a short while previously.
Anyway, I digress. Which players have played for us and subsequently moved on and you've thought 'ah, maybe we should have kept him'? Not even looking for world-beaters...just players we didn't necessarily appreciate at the time, Feel free to eat humble pie on this one
As I shall now with....Danny Simpson. I remember watching him one game and turning to me mate and saying 'if we want to progress, he's one we'll need to look to replace'.
One Premier League title later.....
So, who's yours?
James Milner, maybe not underrated but i still think it was madness selling him.
Sibi was another one who i felt was underrated - he didn't go on to do better elsewhere but i still felt that.
Aye, Milner in particular is a great shout. Ashley treated him shabbily.
Oddly enough Simpson and Milner were the ones straight in my mind before i got down to where you said Simpson on your post Zip.
Also I'd put Harper in that bracket, I know at one period Sir Bobby played him before Given but for a lot of his time he played as second for a lot of his 20 years here..
Steve Watson...was our best right back at the time...Barton was garbage..
Lee Clark...started as first choice during the nearly season...I understand dropping him after signing Batty but not getting rid off...
Joselu....better than his 40m replacement😨😭
Milner going, But the arrival of Bastian Schweinsteiger cussioned the blow.
Certainly Simpson and Milner.
