    Sciatica!

One stupid innocuous little error Sunday morning and I’m in agony.

The one cat brought home her daily offering of a fresh rodent newly deceased ⚰️

I got the spade out and carried it 30 yards to the bin with the spade held out in front of me.

That bit of extra weight of the shovel head carried in such a way caused my back to spasm and it’s f king agony!

Schoolboy error on my part as I’ve had a dodgy lower back for 30 years but this is the worst I’ve felt in a long time.

The frozen shoulder is a misery as well and I feel officially ancient at present.

I can’t visit the shoulder specialist or the doctor or the physio due to the virus situation either.

    Happy days ⚰️⚰️😫

Feel for you Mick, I had a bad dose of it last year, it lasted for about six weeks, for all my footie injuries, a knee replacement and gout in my other knee, I've never felt pain like sciatica, couldn't sit for any length of time or sleep

I know how you feel Mick as I have suffered from sciatica ever since I had a prolapsed disc over twenty years ago. I have tried all the push and prodding experts but have never found any of them really successful. I just manage the pain with the occasional muscle relaxing drug when I do stupid things like you mentioned.

Hey Mick I too have had lower back issues for 25 odd years now

2 things help me - I went to Lilleshall for physio years ago and they gave me some stretches etc unfortunately I lost the sheets they gave me but in essence this worked best -

One is the tennis ball technique - https://www.metdaan.com/tennis-ball-...sciatica-pain/

The other is lie down face down and lift your head up while keeping your body flat so your spine is curved upwards
Put your palms under your chin and elbows on the floor to support your head So your forearms are together and fingers pointing out in either direction

Now gently bend your knees bringing your feet up
Do this as many times as is comfortable

Stop if needed and then just gently try again

Works a treat I have shown quite a few people who swear by this asi do whenever mine goes

Hope it works for you too bro

Mick - BS is right here, anything you can do to make your spine the shape of an "S" but the wrong way round will greatly help. I did my back in emptying the washing machine last year and the pain was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. The temptation is to arch the pelvis outwards which is the exact opposite!

If you can tolerate Ibuprofen type medication along with some Paracetamol with Codeine that will help a lot and get yourself a wheat pack. A gentle walk too for as long as you can manage also helps recovery - good luck pal.

After a first night of purgatory things have gradually improved over the last two days thanks folks.

Ibruprofen gel and paracetamol have helped a bit but this frozen shoulder type problem I’ve got doesn’t help,my general movement is about as Stephen Hawking in his latter years.

Four days ago I was running really well and feeling great so this has been a real bummer.

Knowing my body as well as I do I think it’s a case of time taken resting and being patient and to stop making these ridiculous lifting or bending type actions that I know cause me this issue.

    Thanks for the advice.

Mick it's often quite innocuous everyday movements that tend to set this off and from what i've read we're never the same again once a back problem comes on. Reaching for something seems to aggravate it far more than lifting properly - good job there's not much driving to do at the minute as getting in and out of a car requires Houdini like skills.

The human body is an amazing thing......even this ageing body.

A weeks rest and went out today for a careful run and it feels okay yet a week ago I was crippled with pain.

Just as well because running is such an important part of who I am and affects how I feel and especially my mood.

Glad you're feeling better Mick, but consider yourself lucky that it's cleared up so soon, my attack lasted about six weeks.
