    1990 football on BBC today

Just watched the highlights of the 2 FA cup semi finals on BBC1 and now the World cup semi final between England and W Germany on the Red button.
What a year that was for TV football. I remember watching the England game in the bar in the Full Moon in Hurst Green. Seems like yesterday.

    Half time 0-0
I always used to go on about how Chris Waddle shot from the half way line and hit the bar (albeit the keeper got a hand to it). only just realised that there had been a foul beforehand and the referee had blown his whistle.

    Its all over.
It was 1-1 at 90 mins and at the end of extra time.
It went to penalties and if it wasn't for Steve Bull hitting the corner flag with his penalty we may have won

I watched some highlights of England matches from the 80’s in the last few days.

    It’s remarkable just how s h I t we were in reality.

Regardless of World Cup semis etc when you watch the actual play you realise how pedestrian and static we were and how rigid our football was.

The athleticism, skill on the ball and movement is streets ahead now with English players especially the younger ones.

Very few of those 80’s and 90’s players would get near an England side now.

    Lineker maybe and Stuart Pearce.......Gazza?

    Would Gazza be athletic enough?

The strange thing is that I wouldn’t say the same of the 60’s and 70’s......football then was fast and skilful.

It was thanks to the genius of people like Don Howe that the 70’s and 80’s became such a boring and tedious watch.

Willie Johnston was scathing about Howe in his autobiography.
