Just thinking out loud...... might he be the spark that gets the best out of Marriott and vice versa. Could it be a similar scenario to the 70s when we paid £440K for Derek Hales and then played to his weaknesses instead of giving him a target man to play off as he had with Mike Flanagan at Charlton?

Flanagan would have been the ideal choice as they were Hector/O'Hare- ish in their understanding BUT Derek wasn't the only Hales Flanagan had been scoring with and that led to the training ground fight which saw Hales leave. It would not have been sensible, for non-footballing reasons, to get the two of them. However, we should have got a Flanaganesque partner for Hales. His failure to do the business at Derby was down to the way the gaffer played him.

72 goals in 129 Charlton games was why we bought him. We should have looked at HOW he scored them and played to HIS game. We didn't.
    4 in 23 for Derby.
10 in 24 for West Ham. Again a decent return
76 in 191 on his return to Charlton

IMO, he was a footballer with limited skills but if you played to those skills he was mustard. Career stats of 187 goals in 443 games tell the story.

I don’t see Cocu having enough faith in Marriott to do that although I see your point

The fight was in a game by the way, both sent off

Didn’t Rioch and Kuhl do the same? I meant get sent off for fighting each other, not develop a telepathic relationship, obviously
