I think there's more to it than we're led to believe, if it's about saving money why not take a wage drop or even offer to work for free for a while until things improve, why would all three go?

If what you say is true Stenny, then it would be more in line of getting fans appeased, by appealing to their better nature.
Makes them look heroic and probably looks good on a CV
