    On This Day

A completely knackered United side succumbed to an excellent Gothenburg side as they tragically fell short at the last. Defeated, yet conversely one of the proudest nights of my life on a never to be repeated experience of a European Final in the City of Dundee. Arabs saluted not only the Victors who were deserved winners but the effort of a group of players and their manager who had given everything until there literally was nothing more to give. They played every single possible game available both domestically and in Europe bar one that season, including several replays. But unfortunately a tie against a team that had recently already won the UEFA Cup and had also nearly been in the European Cup Final the year before themselves, was a game too far.

Even in our other, many moments of triumph, I’m not sure I’ve felt Prouder being an Arab.

Absolutely, I was there that night too, it’s one of the most surreal atmospheres before during and after a match I’ve ever witnessed. We walked out of the match down the Hilltown chatting to and shaking hands with the Swedish fans. We landed up in Hamish’s pub. The players came in for a beer too including Richard Gough who’d come up from London to see the match. They all signed my program. It was a magical night despite the result. I still believe if United had won the Scottish Cup on the prior Saturday the euphoria would have carried them through the UEFA final. It was madness having the 2 games so close together!

What a night. I watched it from the steep north terracing, just below the championship flag. I'll never forget it.
There is another pic in the McLean book (which I don't think I should upload here because I had a one-use copyright) taken a full hour, probably more, after the final whistle. It is of a couple of hundred of United supporters in The Shed who had stayed to sing long and loud, and Jim came out to say thanks.
I reckon those supporters had grasped the magnitude of what had really happened. They got the utmost out of an occasion that was unique in Scottish football history, and the city of Dundee's history. It was incredible.
UEFA invented their fair play award because of what their representatives had seen that night at Tannadice.
That night was when we really started being "the world famous".
    We are Dundee United.

I was on the North terracing also. The United support were amazing that night. Something really special happened and I was glad to have been part of it. The Gothenburg players were delighted with the reception they got from our fans.

It was also the last time I went to Tannadice with my dad who, having died in March 1994, never ever saw us lift the Scottish Cup

    Absolutely

    3rd place in a 44 game division
    Uefa Final
    Scottish Cup Final
    League Cup SF

Amazing effort really, if it had been the usual 36 game league then that could have made the difference

Having now read the book, I’ve seen the photo you’re on about Steve. I didn’t stay (I was NorthTerracing that night as well) but one of my best mates did and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Jum came out. He said Jum was nearly (but not quite!) greetin’ himself and apparently was ‘apologising’ to the fans for the way the season had finished out.

I know he’ll not see this but I’d love to say to him, ‘You never let us down. Ever.’

I'm sure most on here have saw the video "little giants" if not , it is on YouTube and captures that whole day brilliantly. The music and the slow motion footage is really a tear jerker, especially when Gothenburg realise they are being applauded by the United fans in the shed and carry on to do a deserved lap of honour. No bitterness, no hatred , just disappointment that they were better than us on the night. (especially at home)
Hence the special link between the fans ever since.

I was in the shed, sure I have a few pictures.

Oh dear peter if you’re biting at this one then you DEFINITELY want to be in your bed for tomorrow’s anniversary. Just like you would have been on the day itself.
