Our Lifeline coordinator, Lynn Lawson, said: "Due to the terms of Lifeline's original constitution, we are unable to register more than 2,500 members. The response has been incredible and we are now having to take the unprecedented action of adding prospective new members to a waiting list.

Can somebody with far greater knowledge of constitutions explain why it cannot be changed? Its seems odd that you have to go on a waiting list when there is clearly demand.

Simple. The constitution was written by a middle manager in the NHS.

I could be wrong but I think any larger and it becomes a lottery and that has a whole new set of rules and regulations that govern it.

Any organisation with a constitution and a managing committee can change the original constitution whenever they want. It's simply called reconstituting the organisation to suit a purpose that was not catered for in the original.
