And you're right Ram59, there is cruelty in the pet trade, from stealing wild animals, to putting rabbits in cages at the bottom of the garden, currently accepted as the norm.
Who knows, maybe in 200 years time, Artificial Intelligence will allow us to communicate with the animal kingdom and they will have ALM, animal lives matter, fighting for their rights.

It sounds far fetched, but is it any more far fetched than man going to the moon, would have sounded 200 years ago?

Fast forward to today, I love a steak and chips or a sunday roast, I keep a dog for a pet, take him for walks on a lead. There are already a significant number of vegans who would argue against my eating habits and probably animal protection activists who think that its wrong to not allow my dog to run free. Most people could not invisage a time when either of these activities would be considered obscene, but who knows?

In 200 years time, my behaviour could be classed almost as a type of cannabalism and false imprisonment. 200 years ago African natives were treated as non humans through ignorance, even lower classes in 'civilised' countries were treated in humanely.
I take your point, to an extent, Ram, but at the risk of sounding like a history teacher, let’s consider a brief timeline.

    Edward Colston lived from 1636-1721.
William Wilberforce, the great abolitionist, was not born until 1759 and the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act did not come into being until 1807.

So your point about legality is well founded although, imo, those who failed to recognise the obscenely inhumane conditions on board slave ships and those slavers who maintained...’enslaved Africans were lesser human beings who benefited from their bondage’ must have been nothing less than morally blind.

To complete my argument, the recently toppled statue of Colston was not erected until 1895, a dozen years short of a century after the abolition of the slave trade...so ignorance can really be no excuse and it is increasingly difficult to see how this was anything other than a case of money over morality and black lives appearing not to matter.
