Leaves them in a poor position with only a few games left to play.

'Paul Cook's side beat Stoke 3-0 at the DW Stadium on Tuesday and are 14th in the table, eight points above the relegation zone.

The standard points deduction for an English Football League club entering administration is 12 points and, should that penalty be applied this season, it would drop them to the foot of the table, four points from safety with six matches left to play'.

    EFL Statement.

As a result of Wigan Athletic confirming they have entered into administration, the Club will be subject to a 12-point deduction and, in accordance with EFL Regulations, the timing of the sporting sanction can only be determined once final league placings in the Championship are determined.

If in the event the Club is relegated by virtue of their final position following the conclusion of the Championship season, then the deduction will apply in League One in 2020/21. However, if the Club is not in the relegation places following the final game of season, the sanction will be then be applied to their season 2019/20 total and final league standings amended as appropriate.

The EFL is awaiting formal notification from the Administrators and once the League has received this it will commence discussions with the relevant individuals with the aim of achieving a long-term future for the Club.

Does anyone else find this a bit concerning.

Whelan sold the club to Hong Kong-based International Entertainment Corporation in November 2018 and there was a further change of ownership in June when Next Leader Fund took control.

So Next Leader Fund another Hong Kong company take over the club on 4th June 2020 and put the club into administration Ist July?

Should the EFL be investigating this.

It's curious that this has come out of the blue, compared with the weeks of news stories that usually precede a club going over the edge.

I very much doubt Dave Whelan would have knowingly put the club in unsafe hands, given the amount of time and money he invested in turning them from lower league also-rans with a poor ground into a Premier League team and eventually FA Cup winners with a very smart stadium. I've always said that the JJB/DW Stadium was one of the best of the early generation of new arenas. Plus, I couldn't believe driving into their car park and not being charged a penny, compared with getting fleeced to park anywhere near soulless new grounds like Shrewsbury's New Meadow.

Unfortunately I don't think the people of Wigan and the surrounding areas ever responded to having a top league football club in the numbers required to sustain that initial success. I don't know whether that's because it's a renowned rugby league town, or if there are various other historical and socio-economic reasons, but it's sad to see the club in trouble.

EFL chairman Rick Parry has been secretly recorded by a Wigan fan discussing rumours related to the club's administration.

In the recording, Parry discusses an alleged bet on the club's relegation from the Championship.

I'm not one for supporting the footballing authorities but this appears to be a tenuous attempt to try and avoid relegation by a disgruntled fan. Sounds like Parry was happy to engage in a conversation and any comment about an 'alleged' bet on relegation has probably been taken right out of context.

If the relegation bet turns out to be true, this has got to be the most outrageous thing ever seen in English football. FL must not dock points.
