Rooty has had a permanent look of gob-smackedness on his mush all day!
Yes Joe, they're good in all departments! No it's not cheating, it's real Test Cricket.
Need a batter to step up, could be Pope. He at least looks like his pants haven't turned brown!

Im a Yorkshireman and fan of course, but Im struggling to remember the last great innings Joe Root played for England.

This hasnt been a good day for us in this first test.

Agreed...form is temporary, class is permanent. Root is a class batsman. Never been quite so sure about his captaincy.

But will he regain true form, ie not the odd good knock but real consistency, whilst Captain and going in at 3??
    I have my doubts.

He again got a start but couldn't capitalise. Tail is too long to stand much of a chance, and no Jack Leach 😒

Not as much between these two sides as it might appear though.
Their opener’s 150+ has been the difference and he was given two lives on Buttler’s nightmare first day.
Maybe Leach for Bess in the next one...only Broad, Woakes and Stokes (when fit) have looked good with the ball...is Buttler safe as keeper?

That’s why I said...’as keeper’. On a wicket where so few have scored runs it’s difficult to drop him as a batsman who’s averaging over 40 (as I write) in this series.
He was poor as wicketkeeper though and we’re a batsman short...so do you recall Bairstow or bring back Crawley?
Much may depend on Stokes’ ability to bowl but I’d be surprised to see both Jimmy and Archer in the next match.
