I think Monty, self purporting to rise against "the intellectual pygmies of this site" might be capable himself of discussing why he feels that 80% of black students making up the presence of an area is depressing in "our once great capital"? Why do you feel that you need to speak for him? I would applaud Monty for speaking his mind exactly on this, and obviously I am intrigued as to why he thinks this and I repeat the question for him- does he view Black people in this light because they are genetically, inevitably more disposed to be disorderly, violent, anti-social, poor parents etc? Or are there social and cultural factors that affect this and make it more complex? It's quite a straightforward question, although the answer could become complex, but the honesty would be refreshing.
Why do you think kids at our college can do no wrong? We take in students that have been excluded and done very badly at school and have all kinds of issues. Of course they often do wrong, but we're here to put help them make better choices and do what usually parents and other grown ups have not done. This isn't a race thing, it's a class thing. The same issues are to be found in similar colleges in all cities that have poverty hit areas, around the world. We have to exclude some kids, which is always heartbreaking bearing in mind that the unanimous factor in every student that we do have to excude is that they have been failed by/given up on by grown ups all the way through their lives. But it happens. Fights happen, we lose some kids to gang activity, but we win much more than we lose. When I read on here from Grist, Fire and Monty all we hear is the negative, from the criminal and failed minority. Nothing at all about those black kids that go off to Uni, go into work/apprenticeships, and that majority of placid, funny, friendly, dopey, angsty, optimistic children that we spend most of the time dealing with. Just normal kids ffs.
Just out of interest, what do you imagine we are teaching them? You seem to be following Kerr down the sad trail that just because you argue for better social fairness for poverty hit children, and think we could do better on equality, that we are obsessive politicos teaching socialism and identity politics. Sorry but we are vocational teachers getting kids ready for work and HE in the creative industries. I'm afraid the day job is a lot more boring and normal than you and Kerr seem to think.
If you're that interested, I'll send you our last Ofsted report that highlights the great work we do in raising kids up from very difficult life situations and educational records and getting them into work. "God help 'em". Indeed :-) It's very positive, but I guess you don't want to read that do you.
