Larger than life character for sure. Broke the mould when he popped out.

Jack didn't know it but he got us off a fine.

On the night we won the World Cup, three College friends and myself set of in my red mini for a trip into Europe camping. After a few days we were near the Italian Border when we were flagged down by the French Police. Max, who spoke fluent French said that the cop reckoned we had overtaken in a no overtaking area. He wanted us to pay about fifty Francs fine. We had a World Cup Willie sticker on the rear window of the car and pointed it out to the law man. Pete, who was about 6ft 3in tall got out of the car and told the Frog that he was Jack Charlton.

At that point it all changed, an Autograph was given and photographs taken, before our now new best friend, waved us on our way.
We legged it down the road having a good laugh about the experience. Good old Jack RIP.
