    Squad and Best 11

    1. What's everyone thinking about how the squad is shaping up for this season?

Personally, I think we're in decent shape - my main concern is LB and CF areas.

    GKs: Lewis, Cerny
DEFENDERS: Logan, Hernandez, Devlin, Taylor, McKenna, Considine, Hoban (maybe)
MIDFIELDERS: Bryson, McGeouch, Ojo, Ferguson, Campbell, Virtannen
WINGERS / NO.10: McGinn, Kennedy, Hayes, Wright, Hedges, McLennan, E Ross
    FORWARDS: Cosgrove, Main, Anderson, Ruth

    2. What do you think is our best 11 and what formation do you reckon McInnes will go with (4231 as usual)?

I'm really struggling to work this out, given some were injured and out of form last season. If we go 4231, we have 5 holding midfielders to choose from (none of them in my mind are really suitable to play the number 10 role). The number 10 role should be someone like McGinn, Kennedy, Wright or Hedges... but it would be very un-McInnes-like to play one of them there, alongside 2 wingers and a centre forward - he usually opts for shoving someone like Ferguson or Bryson there to help out with defensive duties. Hopefully we get the more attacking style we've been promised.

We’re poor defensively & if Cosgrove goes we need a good replacement.
We have no specialised left back.

Of the current squad, I’d go with a 4-4-1-1.

    Lewis
    Hernandez Taylor McKenna Considine
    Kennedy Ferguson Ojo Hayes
    McGinn
    Cosgrove

Subs; Cerny, Logan, Bryson, McGeouch, McLennan, Main & Anderson

No place in 18 for some decent players:
    Devlin, Campbell, Hedges

it's hard to know how he'll start the season without an update on Cosgrove, Logan, McKenna, McGeouch and Main who have all missed the majority of pre-season.

With our 6 central midfielders I can't see him limiting himself to 2 in any game really so we are going to see 3 play 90% of the time.

Hayes will play the majority of the season at left back but I wonder if we'll see Considine there on Saturday. If Logan misses out and Hernandez has to play then Hayes would be best candidate to play in front of Ronnie.

Sorry Bruce but even a half fit Cosgrove or Main will start the match.

    Lewis

    Hernandez Taylor McKenna Considine

    Hayes Ferguson Ojo Bryson McGinn

    Cosgrove

subs: Cerny, Logan, Kennedy, McGeouch, Campbell, Hedges, Anderson
left out: Wright, McLennan, Virtanen, Ross
    injured: Devlin, Main

I'd go along with that RST, but cannot see McInnes changing from the 4-2-3-1, nor sticking with McGinn infield - we can but hope!! If we had that formation and Cosgrove went, I could see Anderson doing well with McGinn behind.

I’d doubt Anderson will ever be our first pick “no.9”.
If/when big Sam goes, he’ll probably bring in some big target man replacement from the English lower leagues

I think I would probably go with that formation and lineup too - I think Hayes is wasted at LB, so would want him on the wing. Hernandez is unproven but you've got to assume that given the price we paid for him, he will be better than an ageing Logan. I'm unsure who should be in the CM - Ferguson is a dead cert, but no idea who will work best alongside him - might be a bit of trial and error between Ojo, McGeouch and Bryson. For that very reason, I actually think D31's lineup is probably more likely to be the one McInnes will favour, as it allows him to fit in more of his CMs.

    Lewis

    Hernandez Taylor McKenna Considine

    Hayes Ferguson Ojo Bryson McGinn

    Cosgrove

I do also wonder whether to accomodate the 3 CMS we might get a 352 sometimes...

I wonder if this could be close, but also doubt were going with 2 up front (unless there is a complete change in ethos)

A team DM might more likely consider would be

    ..................Lewis
    ......Taylor McKenna Considine
    Hernandez.......................Hayes
    ....................Ojo
    ......Ferguson........Bryson / McGeouch
    .................McGinn
    ................Cosgrove

albeit, rumours that Cosgrove may be injured so potentially Main / Anderson in there

Attacking, we become a 3-1-4-1-1, with Hernandez and Hayes pushing forward
Defending, we become a 5-1-3-1, with McGinn dropping into the right hand side of Ferguson

I can also easily see Kennedy and McGinn being swapped out
