    O/T 'Classic' Vauxhall Cars

I see there's an exhibition of 'classic' Vauxhall cars being staged in Luton. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-...herts-53916943

Our first family car was a Vauxhall Viva and later on Dad 'graduated' to a Cavalier. I must admit to erring towards a Chevette as my first car before opting for a Ford Escort but later in life did have a MK II Astra (the rounded version) and in an emergency once bought a Carlton at auction which served it's purpose for about a year.

What's your experience with them, or in fact any other make/model of what could be considered a 'classic' car. Mrs CA had a lime green Allegro when I met her

Vauxhall and ‘Classic Car’ should never be used in the same sentence.

Had a few cavaliers over the years, a few bought at auctions. Never had much to complain about them, one of the auction ones had a serious problem and got it fixed under warranty. Inexpensive motoring.
Driven other Vauxhall’s models over the years, company pool cars or hire cars. Astras, Mokha,Carlton Corsa and insignia.
The insignia is not only my fav Vauxhall, it’s up there with the best ever of any car I’ve driven. Great car, nice drive, fuel economy and cavernous boot for holidays.

My first ever car was a J reg Viva estate from the garage in Dalton which I paid 695 quid for in '74. It was a a bag of shyte and a rust bucket and I vowed never to buy another Vauxhall and never did. I also did some work at the Vauxhall plant in Luton and seeing the final inspection guys levering the doors into position with a lump of 4x2 reinforced my decision lol.

My Dad had a Viva when I was learning to drive and I was allowed to drive it until I passed. Then it was "buy your own car" which I did - a mark one 1970 Escort 1100 which blinded his Viva and is probably still my favourite. I had a Chevette, a Maxi, mini clubman estate, MK 3 cortina - none of them great. I had 3 MK 1escorts - all good.

695 for a 3 year old car. Those were the days. I remember there was always excitement as a kid to see the first new 'letter' car when they came out. Think I paid 600 for a 7 year old P reg Escort MK2 in 1983.

Now this was a good car.

Never owned a Vauxhall and nobody in my family had one. Learned to drive on a lovely black 1959 Austin A 35 which I bought for 29 pounds in 1969. Fabulous little car which I had for about four years. Sadly, I neglected it badly in its later life and it finished up in the bottom of a quarry where it was tipped late at night. Probably still rusting away there...

Who would have thought that such a well respected author and MM contributor was the grandfather of fly tipping
