Pulis Knew A Player - Gnabry!

Tonight I’ve watched a Pulis masterclass.

As Gillingham manager in 97 taking off his top scorer at 2-0 up v Man City in the play off final only to then see City equalise then beat his side.

Flip over to watch Gnabry running the show for the European Champions in waiting.

A player who couldn’t get a kick for us.

    You’re a genius Tony 🎱⚰️

I thought the red wine had affected my eyesight 8-2 to Bayern and then the snooker - the most incredible last evening sessions that I ever did see. Anyway Pulis, doubt anyone will ever take a chance on him at managerial level again a real dinosaur. I remember a poster on here called pulisaraus.

Nonesense. Gnabry was useless when he was here, was very similar to Burke!...He grew up got better and now is a great player. Why did Arsenal loan him out if he was so useful back then?

Because he couldn’t get in to that particular Arsenal team, which, then, was a very good team, far, far, better than ours. Not easy to do for any young talent. And Arsenal wanted him to have 1st team experience in the PL.

He couldn’t get into ours because of the anti football principles advocated by Pulis.

You watched him when he played. There's no way he would have been left out if he was that good back then. Give Pulis credit. Not our type of manager but well respected nonetheless.

No, I really didn’t see much of him tbh, I only remember one short performance coming on as a sub. And, we all know it is not easy to always shine as a sub (and he didn’t on that single occasion), being on the pitch a short period of time. I do remember wondering why he wasn’t on the pitch though.

    Correct Thomas.

He got the odd League Cup game and that was about it.

Pulis was a young players graveyard.

15 mins as a sub in the Prem and 2 League Cup appearances. You couldn't make it up.

Perhaps he wasn't tall enough for a Pulis side!

Well, then it was those 15 min in the PL that I remember - not easy to show your potential then.

Having seen glimpses of Gnabry for Arsenal I recognised him as a real talent and I was really chuffed when we landed him on loan. He couldn't get into the Arsenal side on a regular basis due to a combination of their team being pretty good back then and because he was struggling to recapture his fitness following injury.

He came for game time but regardless of his natural talents he just wasn't fit enough. And although I was chuffed we'd got him I never really saw the tactical fit. Game time was always going to be a struggle. There had been question marks relating to his attitude to training whilst at Arsenal. I think coming here on loan was the wake up call he needed and he clearly listened to it.

He's gone on to really develop his game and his fitness levels are streets ahead of what they were because he's applying himself. Cracking player who was a bad fit for us back then but he's gone on to be a good fit elsewhere. Right player+ wrong circumstances = poor recruitment at a time of poor football.

It was a match made in hell for the lad but in truth he offered little to a team built on playing in certain zones of the pitch and heavily reliant on set plays. I don't really understand why we went for him to be honest. Chuffed though I was I could never see how it was going to work as he wasn't what was needed for Pulisball.

Further to this if his attitude to training was as off here as it reportedly was at Arsenal there was no way he'd have been picked for a TP side either. There are at least two sides to every story.
