    Deid unlucky Proper Mannies’ cricketer

David Capel, estimable all-rounder of Northants and England.

Unfortunate career-wise in being at his peak as the national team of Willis, Gower, Botham etc was in its death throes, and the selectors were sticking pins in Wisden and picking anyone who held the bat by the handle and knew Cow Corner from Coo’s Erse Wi A Banjo.

    Late fifties apparently. FFS.

Aaah, sad news. I admired (in a manly way) the 'tache and mullet combo which he sported at his peak. I used to 'rock' that look masel' back then. I wish it would come back into fashion. For men.
    Over!

I didn't realise he'd passed away, genuinely sad about this. He was a very good player for Northants. RIP

"Capel Dave" - and that is why cricket journalism is Shakespearean when compared with fitba's Mr Men output.

    Applause all round the ground.

Heard that on the tv this week. Pretty average international cricketer if truth be told. But, at just a couple of years older than me, affae young.

That was my point really - the whole English game was average, plodding and poorly-led. He was one of few who still put in the maximum shift when the squad wad populated with confidence-shattered slackers.
