60mins: An hour gone & #Rovers are growing in confidence again. #NUFC haven't had a chance since the restart & Blackburn are enjoying plenty of possession in advanced areas.

Newcastle's midfield is struggling to get control of the game. Bruce getting frustrated #CarabaoCup

I've watched the game and Dan is making loads of sideway passes and little layoffs. I've only noticed 2 lazer balls over the top. One was a little high for the winger and the other was cut out and didn't reach the same winger.
He's got loads of time and the champ should suit him but he's playing well short of what we saw after Xmas last season

    Opinion on nufcblog:

Bruce talked about Barlaser in his press conference after the game as reported in the Chronicle today:

“It would have been nice if we’d had more possession and all the rest of it, but the kid did okay.”

“It was a difficult evening for us all, even my established Premier League players, let alone a young lad like him.”

“But I’m sure he’ll have enjoyed the experience even though it was hard going at times.”

We’re almost certain that both Barlaser and Jacob Murphy will return to the Championship teams they were on loan to last season.

Dan will return to Rotherham United for the season, and Jacob Murphy will be back at Sheffield Wednesday.

Both lads had very good seasons on loan last season and Steve Bruce wanted to take a look at them this summer.

    Only opinion, mind.

Steve Bruce must chop Newcastle United squad down to size as Premier League deadline looms
Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce must chop his Magpies squad down to size in just a few weeks to fit in line with Premier League regulations.

Newcastle United's English head coach Steve Bruce gestures on the touchline during the English Premier League football match between Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, north-east England on July 15, 2020.

United have an over-inflated first-team player pool at present and the departures of some is a must.

In total Bruce has 30 players to trim down to 25 when the transfer window finally closes on United and the rest of the Premier League in the first week of October. And that’s without the two loan additions Bruce has earmarked for his group.

So who will make the cut and what big decisions does Bruce have to make? Here our Newcastle United writer Liam Kennedy takes a look at the 30 players in the mix – and highlights those most at risk of Bruce’s Premier League axe.

    At risk (5)
Fabian Schar, DeAndre Yedlin, Jacob Murphy, Christian Atsu, Dan Barlaser

DeAndre Yedlin and Atsu’s days are done, while Dan Barlaser could well see his late development, at 23, go against him. The impressive midfielder is struggling to make the cut.

Brucie has to make a decision on his squad by the start of October. I doubt he will want to drag it out that long for the sake of those being dropped, so we might know one way or t'other by the end of next week.

    Fingers crossed!
