... really hate to say this but Notts may be in no fit condition to play the match at Dover. The problem is all hotels in surrounding areas are full of illegal immigrants/economic migrants spunging of the feeble UK govenment. Expecting that Notts would ordinarily make this trip an overnight stay away, I blame NA for not resolving the boat migrants crisis. He's got to go ...

Just listening to this now, a pity the sound quality isn't too good on this one because he is very forthcoming with lots of interesting stories. He's actually just mentioned my website and unfortunately he's gone looking for something that isn't there at present because I'm in the process of transferring line-ups and details over to the new database, it was the Portsmouth game with the thrice taken penalty - he couldn't remember if he'd played in it but he did....

"Extraordinary scenes at Fratton Park where Notts failed to convert a penalty at the third attempt - The 1st re-take was ordered because the goalkeeper moved to save Kevin Randall's effort, then a 2nd re-take because the referee didn't give a signal before Don Masson had a go and hit the bar. Finally Stubbs stepped up for the 3rd attempt but his effort was saved. Happily it didn't matter in the end as the Magpies returned to Nottingham with both points."

Nice that Tommy Lawton's name comes up in relation to something positive, post playing career, it's probably not so well known that he came back for a 3rd time as chief scout in 1968, some press reports were suggesting he was being considered for the manager's job again around the time Les Allen and Ron Wylie turned it down. When Sirrel arrived, Jimmy decided he wanted to do the scouting work himself and Tommy ended up signing on the dole in the January of 1970. Imagine Harry Kane (of similar stature to Lawton in today's currency) ever having to sign on!
