Any Classic Car Experts On Here?

A few weeks ago I made the mistake of dragging my heels when the car of my 18 year old wet dream came up for sale.

In 1980 as an 18 year old I bought the first of my four Ford Capri’s.......a 1600 GT in Sebring Red with black vinyl roof for £1095.

I loved that car and it’s cool reg number of WOO 922L.

A fantastic restoration model in the exact same specifics came up for sale in June and I spent 24 hours too long making up my mind and I was gutted when it had sold.

£11,995 might seem like a lot compared to the £1095 I paid 40 years ago but these are going for £20k to £35k in some cases now so I know it’s a good investment.

I’ve tried all the usual internet sights including classic car sights but I’m struggling to find one in the right colour and spec.

Any advice?

Does anyone know anyone who deals in this sort of stuff or anyone that owns one?

I know it’s a long shot but it’s an itch I have to scratch,

I had a gold 1600GT Capri with a black vinyl roof which I thoroughly enjoyed. Remember in the Winter when I had to put paving slabs in the boot to stop it sliding about. My mate had one of the limited edition JPS black ones which was quite a head turner in the days.

When I was 18 or so I had a temporary job with a business owned by a neighbour. of my parents. The owners wife had a white Capri 2.8i Fastback. I'd only just passed my test and one winter the snow had fell so heavily she asked me if I would drive it to her home as she didn't want to.

It was probably a combination of stupidity, naivety and wanting to drive a high performance car at that age but even today, I can still vividly remember that trip down Mucklow Hill in Halesowen and down the big hill past where the Badgers Sett pub is now in to Hagley as if it were yesterday. You only had to look at the accelerator and that car flew like a rocket. Quite an experience I never care to repeat and I didn't have paving slabs in the back.

Mick - Have you registered an interest with any of the owners clubs? as I know they're out there.

I thought of that mate but these sites all seem to want a fee for you joining up.

A relative of mine restores classic cars. He uses the Exchange and Mart web site. It's still going apparently only online these days.

He sometimes buys really rare stuff and sets up alerts based on what he wants and in turn gets an email once what he's looking for appears on their web site. He reckons its pretty good. He does the same with auto trader as well. Might be worth considering?

A bloke on our road growing up had the black and gold Capri (I assume it was the JPS one) me and my mates used to love that car

My mum also got me a black JPS body warmer (I'm guessing it was from the F1 team) when I was a kid I didn't take it off for weeks

That and my Starsky & Hutch tshirt were my favourite tops when I was little

When the Mk2 Capri came out, my Dad ordered a gold GT model from Hangers on Broad Street; he didn’t like the black vinyl roof or the Matt black bonnet, so he ordered one minus those features. A really nice car but like many cars of that era, they suffered badly from body rot. Which is, I imagine, why you see very few about these days. Anyway, that’s the anecdote but I am afraid, Mick, that I can’t point you in the direction of a suitable example.

I've had a couple of Capri's a m reg mk1 3litre GT went to the Man U 3 Albion 5 in this car. Years later I had a 3litre Ghia,gold with brown vinyl roof.
My mate son is in the classic car trade ,he does most of the work on the cars for Classic car show SOS. I'll ask him if he knows of any up for sale.

The one on the link below closest resembles in looks the 1600 GT I’m trying to replicate from my youth.

I’m an idiot to be honest with you.....the exact model in every detail came up for sale in mint condition for £11,995 in June and I spent a day too long thinking about it.

The guy was underselling it in my opinion and I could’ve sold it for £20k at any point so I’m mad with myself now.

This is the look I want on a 1600 GT.....

Hi Mick, that's a great looking car my Mk1 was a metalic blue.
When you look back at the old cars you had and the prices they fetch now.
I've had MGB's and a Gtv8 Costello version ,Tr6's,Stag and 2 escorts Mk1 Mexico and a Rs2000.
Would have made a great pension plan,if had kept a couple.
