Eddie Van Halen could not read music. His mom made him take piano lessons and he winged his way through it until he let her know he was quitting and focusing on the guitar.
Basically created his own style of guitar playing to offset his lack of music reading. Simply Brilliant.
That's when you know you have a gift from God when you create your own style of playing an instrument. Earl Scruggs did the same on the banjo.
