Paul Lambert has left Ipswich by mutual consent.

Does that mean they mutually agreed he be fired?

Paul Lambert was given a 5 year contract, which Ipswich Town fans could not believe.
In the media it has been said, that a takeover of the club, was going to take place, with the new owners fetching a new manager in, I think Paul Lambert, ought to have waited to get the sack, then got some money out of it.
But who knows, has the club warmed his hand with compensation, to leave Ipswich Town, which could have been a agreement with the deal going through with the new owners.

Think you've got it there Eric, a Gentlemen's agreement as they say in brown envelopes. Then step forward Paul Cook. He's shown his patience here and will surely make an impact at Ipswich. Can you still get a price on him getting the job?

Not really brown envelopes any more, they are called compromise agreements.

An agreement is drawn up usually for an agreed amount of compensation but the “leaving” party has to agree to certain things to get the money. For example not working for a competitor within a certain time frame, or in the case of football managers not slagging off the club they are leaving.

The agreements can include basically anything to get a quiet and painless departure, ie you can keep your mobile phone, laptop and company car, anything to avoid bad publicity and a claim of unfair dismissal.
