The Premier League are attempting to stop top-flight managers speaking about the controversial new pay-per-view TV offering that begins this weekend.

Sportsmail reveal the Premier League have written to all 20 clubs telling them their managers should avoid commenting on the matter, asking them to instead focus on talking up the urgent need for fans to return to stadiums.

Burnley's clash with West Brom last Monday tea time had the worst viewing figures to date and has been described as “exceptionally low”.

That has caused embarrassment and raised question marks about the whole concept.

Premier League shareholders will meet on Tuesday when the 20 clubs will discuss the issue and whether to change it, scrap it or potentially reduce the price.

The issue will be discussed on Tuesday but there is a feeling that it has become so toxic they may have to look again and Premier League chiefs will point to the fact that it was always being done on an experimental basis up until the end of October.

One television source suggested the clubs may opt to do one more round of pay-per-view games and then review it again after the international break.

But it has now become a source of huge embarrassment even though some of the more popular games would suggest it has been worth doing it for the clubs and the Premier League.

I'm amazed anyone at all paid £15 to watch that, especially given there was a perfectly good feed on FirstRow Sports for free, even though the commentary was in Serb-Croat.

The PL wants to reduce it to a tenner, Mike Ashley wants it reducing to a fiver, panic setting in.

PL say no change for next two rounds then £9.95 a game.
Given we are not on Sky or BT sport after Monday for the rest of this year. We’re faced with paying for 7 as Amazon have 2 in December.
    I might buy a couple!

I was born poor and consequently can be really tight (according to the Child Bride), and thanks to sinkov, I'm now brushing up on the old Serbo-Croat.

I wouldn't waste a penny on paying to watch the Clarets on PPV serving up Schite boring football that we do.
