Saw a very interesting programme recently comparing Donald Trump with Henry the Eighth. One considered England’s most notorious King and the other America’s most outrageous showman president. Both second sons who didn’t at first expect to inherit their father’s empire. Both ditched their first wives to marry their mistresses. Both obsessed with s*x and in later life with much younger women. Both obsessed with power and willing to ruthlessly dispose of advisors when they felt they had been crossed by them. Steve Bannen even described himself as America’s Thomas Cromwell. Both Henry and the Donald battled the media. The printing press was taking off during Henry VIII’s reign and often published stories criticising the King. He would have counter pamphlets printed describing these articles as “fake news”. Sound familiar. If only he could have tweeted daily from Hampton Court!
