True and well corrected. Just looked deeper into VAR on the premier league website. It clearly states “ VAR will be used only for “clear and obvious errors” or “serious missed incidents” in four match-changing situations: goals; penalty decisions; direct red-card incidents; and mistaken identity.” So take the Gallagher penalty yesterday - was that a clear and obvious mistake after the ref had awarded the penalty? I thought the foul in the lead up to their penalty was much more clear and obvious.

With technology now being so advanced maybe they should do it like this.

1/ Software is used to blank out the faces and the strips of the teams involved and a generic ground background is used so they don’t know which match they are being asked to officiate on.

2/ They should only be at a screen when a decision is needed.

3/ There should be three different people looking at the decision but with each VAR ref totally isolated from the others.

4/ Within 45 seconds of the replay they have to select a yes or no button. This means you make more of a gut decision rather than poncing around looking for things that aren’t there.

5/ The votes are relayed to the ref within one minute of the replays starting.

If you don’t know which game you’re watching and you are only one private vote out of three then bias disappears and all that’s left is stupidity.

Probably a bit convoluted ...... but I agree with the principle. Would the VAR make the same decision if they didn’t know which team was which? Would at least eliminate bias .... mind the way we play you don’t need to see the faces and shirts to know it’s us .....

In my opinion there is no incentive to rid the game of any perceived bias or favouritism.

When Scudamore was heading up the Premier League, he openly said and was widely quoted at the time when Moyes was managing Utd that ‘Man U being out of the top 4 was bad for business for the Premier League’. That tells us where the leagues priorities lie.

It’s now a product with global sales and the legions of plastic fans who all support the winning side which is why everything about the league is about the welfare of the top few teams and it isn’t getting any fairer as the latest project showed us a few weeks back
