Not my favorite driver but glad he's ok, the halo probably stopped him from being decapitated or at the very least it help to keep the barrier away enough for him to climb out, without a halo I'm sure he'd of been pinned in in that fireball assuming he was still alive

It is, but its also remarkably safe these days, go back to the days of Hunt and lauda and 2 or 3 fatalities per season was not unusual.

you probably aren't as big an F1 dweeb as me and my first thought was someone you may not have heard of, 'Patrick Cevert', check him out but not too closely. Yes things have improved, but as recently as two seasons ago (before the halo) I don't think RG would have survived

Do you mean Francois Cevert who drove for Tyrell in the 70s, if i remember correctly?

Last F1 fire was 1989, Berger's Ferrari at Imola, I felt guilty watching it as it burned and burned with Berger briefly unconscious inside it. Luckily he too walked (well staggered) away

What was it, 53G they say he experienced? How he got away with no breaks or fractures is nothing short of amazing.

As you say, Andy, 31 years since the last fire. Still not 100% safe from it though and, as long as the fuel is flammable, never will be. F1 has to be, and seems to be, ever vigilant so, if there are lessons to be learned from this, they probably will be.

The other amazing thing to me was the way the car split in two. I hadn't expected to see that happen to an F1 car.

Luckily, slight burns to hands and feet and some bruising is the extent of his injuries.

While ever there is a joint between the survival cell and the engine and all the bits there's always a chance they'll split on impact but that depends on the severity of the crash and this one was enough to do that, it was reported last night it was a 50g and 137mph crash

Your right I know next to nothing about the sport tbh haven't followed it for over two decades. But having read details of yesterdays crash it seems a miracle the guy survived with relatively minor injuries!
