O/T:- 'Team GB' at the Olympic Games

Does anyone know why we compete in the Olympic Games as 'Great Britain' (Team G.B., designated 'GBR') rather than as The United Kingdom?

Surely using GB excludes Northern Ireland? I don't think NI has a team separate from Great Britain (our largest island comprising England, Scotland and Wales). For that matter what about places like The Isle of Man, Channel Islands etc. Great Britain doesn't encompass those either. It's puzzling me

After more digging I've found an article that answers my own question...

"Team Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands and UK Overseas Territories" doesn't roll easily off the tongue.'

Team UK would make a bit more sense, but would still leave out the IoM and Channel Islands I believe.
