Merry Xmas to you, NMN, sounds like a tasty dinner. I could have written your first 3 sentences and also wasn't going to get a whole bird this year until I discovered all the "small" turkey crowns had gone by Wednesday so back to the traditional which mean turkey curry tomorrow and cold turkey (!) on Sunday.
My "something different" this year it's carrots and parsnips in mulled cider.
    Bon appetit.

    Standard starter - prawn cocktail.

Standard main apart from some cauliflower and cheese sauce which I've not had with turkey before.

Pudding was exceptional - tiramissu with baileys extra thick cream. Had mine gone in about 3 seconds.

Carrots and parsnips in mulled cider .... oooh now. Ah can see how that wid work! ... and in my opinion, carrots an' parsnips are nae jist for xmas! ... hae tae try this sometime.

Yer puddin sounds crackin Mondo ... simple but effective ... likee!

For the record, ma real 'push the boat oot' item ... the halloumi tray bake wis good ... but only as good as expected. Ma bacon wrapped sassidges wi caremellised maple syrup wis a bit 'yasss min' .... the roast carrots and parsnips wi garlic, salt and thyme dressin wis likewise, but the surprisinly good item wis, on paper, the maist borin! .... Oven roasted (LidL, frozen) chicken breast wi olive oil, mixed herbs and smoked paprika ... a real 'find'!

..... the soup wis good ... but, hey, Ah always mak a good soup. As for the puddin? ... massive hit! ... the mandarin oranges were relegated tae the subs bench, but Ah can fully recommend - for cheapness and satisfaction - slices o' cherry cake, alongside rasp jeely, assaulted from above wi' vanilla yoghurt, and bombarded wi choc coated peanuts.

Onywye ... aa the bestive for the festive ... and ... COYR!

With a late ****ager doing what we would call home economics who thinks he's Gordon Ramsay (more like Alf, happy to accept dodgy decisions in his favour), it was a butterflied turkey crown with sausage, sage n' onion stuffing and a bit of chorizo sausage running through the middle all wrapped in streaky smoky bacon.
    Very nice it was too.
A side a cauliflower in cheese and truffle sauce (has anyone discovered how good truffles are later in life?) and some home made roast tatties.

As a side note I've discovered just how lovely some fresh chives are sprinkled on scrambled egg - amazing, really amazing.

Sounds like an excellent plan to apply some flavour to otherwise flavourless turkey .... comment re. truffles duly noted ... must try

Oh .... Ah forgot tae mention two additions tae oor denner which made a valued contribution ...

1 bottle o' home brewed blueberry wine, bottled back in April, and all the better for it's term in captivity, and
1 bottle of elderflower wine, bottled early August .... nicely mellowed, yet retaining an appropriate level of tang, and alluring bouquet
