As he interviewed Donald Trump on bended knee, Michael Gove besmirched what few claims he had to be a decent politician, journalist or human being. Even at that early date, just after Trump’s inauguration in 2017, everyone with eyes to see knew Trump was prepared to tell any lie and rouse any rabble. Far from being repelled, Gove was excited. Trump was a “warm and generous” friend of Brexit Britain, he said. Readers of the Times shouldn’t see him as a dangerous fraud but concentrate their anger on liberal politicians and commentators in the “foreign policy establishment”, who treated poor Trump with undeserved “scorn and condescension”.

The exhilaration that extreme political movements bring lies in the permission they give to sin. Trump showed the British and the American right they could abandon the old morality and mainstream conservatives would go along for the ride rather than side with the hated liberal “establishment”. No punishment would follow if they lied or incited hatred. On the contrary, Trump showed they needed to lie and incite to win and the greater the lies and more inflammatory the incitements, the greater the victory.

If you don’t want to get lost in the details, just stand back and breathe in the polluted air. The breaches of international law, the attacks on independent institutions, the loyalty tests, the winning of elections and referendums with promises that could never be kept and were never meant to be kept, the dazzling incompetence, the braggartry, bellicosity and absurdity. I am not pretending there are no differences between Johnson and Trump, just that you will strain your eyes trying to spot them.

For balance, Trump Foundation was wound up in New York and the funds distributed to charities because the Trump family had been committing fraud with the funds.

Here is a list of some of his failures ............

Those 6 bankruptcies his businesses have had, think of the employees and other creditors that lost a lot of money in those. Maybe its easy to be generous sometimes when its not your money?

In the 1980s, Trump was a swashbuckling real-estate investor who bet big on the rise of Atlantic City after New Jersey legalized gambling there. He acquired three casinos that by 1991 couldn’t pay their debts. The Taj Mahal declared bankruptcy in 1991, the Trump Plaza and the Trump Castle in 1992. Lenders restructured the debt rather than liquidate and Trump put his casino holdings into a new company that went bankrupt in 2004. The company that emerged from that restructuring declared bankruptcy in 2009. Trump’s 6th bankruptcy was the Plaza Hotel, which he bought in 1988. It went bankrupt by 1992.

And some on here are defending the guy? Jeez!

Indeed Swale. He did do some good with his charitable actions but, IMO, his bad moments far outweigh them and we've not even touched on the seksual assault and rape charges pending or why he had to pay a **** actress six figures to keep quiet.....

There are many grubby capitalists who ahve dubious businesses who have made charitable contributions, now if you Bill gates and devote sizeable proportion of your fortune to a charitable cause, I admire that, if your a millionaire avoiding taxes and screwing others over and you give a few thousand to charity, thats hogwash in my opinion!

and where do you sit Swale. Id guess you are a millionaire if you include the value of your pension fund and house as well as conventional assets, savings etc. So how many thousand do you donate to charity every year, and how much hogwash does hypocrisy equate to?
