Cresswell played in League Cup game vs Hull and made Malik wilks look like prime Ronaldo (fat one)

Challenge for the coaching team is how do they bridge the gap between u23 and the first team - they either need decent first team minutes with us or out on loan.

The Square Ball podcast was interesting too with them thinking MB does not quite understand the cups in UK yet and how much lower division teams raise their game against top teams.

They also made the point some of us made that the second half subs ripped out the more experienced spine of Cooper, Struijk and Rodrigo and replaced with Casey, Jenkins and Harrison which when coupled with Kiko reenacting different ways to concede a goal was serious pilot error rather than player error.

I guess we need to be patient and allow the youngsters to develop even though we could do with a few being ready now.

Maybe that is why they allow so many to train with the first team but there is a world of difference between practice and being match hardened.

He was brought up quite close to me so have tried to see how he progressed and sadly have to agree he doesn't appear to have what's needed for the top flight

They may hit their prime but they should be showing good signs of it by their 20s you won't find many footballers who don't.

Don’t disagree but the U23 system won’t develop them. I guess we are still pulling out of the chronic lack of investment in training and youth since Bates/Cellino etc where
Despite that we got the odd gem - delph/cook/Philips etc.

We haven’t yet figured out how to manage a decent prem 1st team squad and a decent u23 squad. We probably need to be loaning our 10 to 15 a year for them to get the experience they need just as City, Chelsea and Liverpool do.

Either that or pick 4 to develop and give them regular minutes in games where we are comfortably ahead.

This summer will be interesting as I think a lot of dead wood players out on loan or not playing will come to the end of their contracts and will be others we may want to move on.

    De Bock
    OKane
    bouy
    shaunnesey
    Grot
    Foreshaw?
Berarsdi (maybe he becomes a coach)
    Casilla
    Pablo?
    Costa?
    Alioski?
    Roberts?
    Douglas

Of those a bit younger out on loan - who will be retained?

    Gotts
    McAlmont
    Stevens
    Hossanah
    Bogusz
    Edmonson
Murcia - think deal for him to leave is done

If we have lots of outgoings then that should mean more space and budget to both bring in more quality and to promote u23s as well as incorporate those who are coming back from loan such as Gotts and McAlmont.

If we sign three more players of the quality of Koch. Rapha and Rodrigo bit in the positions we are weak then that should substantially improve the side. With a better side we may be able to better carry the odd u23 in games as they improve.

Not sure it's an "either / or" thing wrt to the loan v 1st team game time.

If we have committed to the salaries for the youth players via (relatively) long term contracts, then do as you say, loan out those who show promise but haven't had 1st team exposure at the right level (Championship should be the aim). At the same time, get those "3 or 4" you mention onto the 1st team subs bench and play them wherever it seems possible to do so, even if its only for 10 minutes here or there where a game is relatively safe (no such thing as absolutely safe in the PL!).

A good cup run would/should have provided more opportunities for the latter, but if PL management was easy, everyone would be doing it.

Said it before, and happy to repeat, there is no point stuffing the "non-1st team" squads with players who you don't plan to use IN the 1syt team, sometime (we're not City or Liverpool etc, hoovering up talent to stop others from benefitting, we don't have that kind of financial capability).

Reading through this topic, there seems to be a general co senses that our youngster may not be getting the best level of exposure/experience by way of 1st team games or loans.

Without wishing to blame Biesla's management style & strategy to much, isn't this lack of senior match experience for our youngsters one of the pitfalls of only having a small senior squad with little to no planned player rotation?

Don't our young players who show promise train with the first team?????? Throwing on a young player for 10 minutes of a game when it's safe to do doesn't sound good imo. What experience do you get in 10 minutes?

Should be loaned out as First Team players in the other Divisions. Would get more experience both negative and positive.

As someone once quoted to me. "How we respond to a defeat defines us. More than how we respond to a win"

It has actually surprised me given that Corberan went to Huddersfield we sent nobody there to play. I thought some of our better ones might have got a chance with him as it is perfect first team football with a coach who will basically be copying what Bielsa does.

Or is it a case of Corberan didn't rate them and doesn't want them?
