After 18 last season we would have been around the same position and 10 points away from safety
That's a decent indicator on this season looking at that we are well on course to be safe

Sounds about right, I think this year 35 points could comfortably save us, which is 4 wins. I'd be surprised if we didn't hit 40-45 points personally. We may have bad games but we've got more than enough to pick up wins inbetween defeats.

We are lucky that Sheff Utd are so dreadful this year and that I don't genuinely see West Brom surviving with allardyce. Fulham are doing ok at the moment but I think they'll just pick up draws here and there with not enough wins.

Then all we need is likes of Newcastle, Burnley or Brighton to fall off a cliff, most likely Newcastle and then we've no fears. I feel our games vs Newcastle is huge, beat them and they suddenly end up 7 points behind us and we are 9 points off almost guaranteed safety. Lose and confidence could drop, we start getting dragged in.
